I've been thinking a lot about squicks and triggers and dislikes lately. The more I read and the longer I'm in fandom, the more set and defined my preferences seem to become. I have a laundry list of what would be in my ~perfect fic~ and a list (almost as long) of things I'd rather not--or flat out won't--read. But for (almost) every item on that list, I can think of a fic that I enjoyed despite, or even because, of that very thing.

Earlier this year, the podcast Fansplaining out out a rec list of exceptions to the "no" in reference to their recent survey where people ranked various tropes and kinks. It inspired me to put together my own little rec list of fics I loved, despite them containing things I normally prefer not to read. I figured posting it now as a tribute to Rectober's past, would be perfect timing. :)

I must say that I'm normally not a big fan of threesome/polyamory/open relationship type fics, so I was really unsure bout this one going into it. But, like everybody had assured me, it was brilliant. This is quite *my* Sherlock and John, but I loved them nonetheless. I adored the relationship between Sherlock and John here, the love and trust, and fear and uncertainty of the other's feelings. The sex scenes were smoking hot, but even hotter was how in control of everything Sherlock was. Even though most of the fic is John getting off with other people, Sherlock is an undeniable presence throughout the fic. I thought the ending was great, and very fitting for this Sherlock and John.

Really interesting read! Definitely a little mushy in places and not always the most sophisticated, but I really enjoyed the plot, and I loved Clark and Lex's connection.

I was able to read some quality Teen Wolf fic this month off of my to-read list, and it made me very happy! (I also read some not-so-quality fic that I had bookmarked, and is there anything more disaapointing than bookmarking a long!fic for later, not getting around to it for months, then finally settling in for what your sure will be a hit, only to have to back button a quarter of the way through because you just CANNOT anymore? His cocky grin, however, is fading quickly into a look of shock and confusion. Other than a pelt shaped into a sloppy kilt, his legs are bare too, despite the chill winds coming in off the ocean.
"You're not a girl," he says in a gently lilting accent that's like an odd blend of all the coastal voices Derek's ever heard, squinting at Derek like his eyes might somehow be deceiving him.
Unlikely, given his dark beard and broad, well-muscled shoulders, let alone what he's got under his kilt.
Really beautiful fic. I loved the gentleness here, the beautiful melancholic undertone throughout the fic. Selkie!Stiles is wonderful, and I really enjoyed him coming to terms with his bisexuality. Gorgeously written, and a truly lovely and poignant connection between Stiles and Derek.

This was a wonderful, slow burn fic, sort of a retelling of Canon. There's wolf!Derek and curses and dream sharing, and lots of wonderful, gentle pining. I just adored everybody here, and how all of the relationships are portrayed. Derek and Stiles were amazing, and their connection was just great. I also particularly enjoyed Derk and Scott's relationship here. It's like how it could have been in canon if they'd had a different start and Scott had more of a choice in the bite. Just an awesome read.

Title: 5 Reasons Stiles Stilinski is a Horrible Roommate

The relationship development between Draco and Harry is a little fast, but the chemistry between them is scorching. Satisfying ending, and the whole thing felt very believable with both it's ups and downs.

This fic is super hot. Seriously. The first one was gloriously sexy, and then we have the gorgeous second fic, with some really lovely characterizations. I loved the slightly different take with the lack of angst over Harry being alive, and the lack of too much "will they, won't they" back and forth. The relationship develops more slowly, but very surely, and the whole things is lovely and super fucking hot.

Another one of my prompts! This was one of my silliest ones, and I was so thrilled when I saw it was claimed, because I was super curious what the creator would come up with. And this is so much fun! Draco channeling Snape at his most potiony-dramatic, and Harry delightfully exasperated. The three art panels art gorgeous, and the little drabble to go along with is perfect. Though, I must point out that, while all of it is fabulous, the second art panel, where we get to see Draco in his potion's lab, is seriously freaking awesome and impressive. I seriously stared for five minutes straight, zooming in on all of the little jars and giggling with delight at all of the little details. So much fun!

It's a really quick read, and a wonderful little peak into Harry's head as he gets ready to tell Ron & Hermione about his new relationship. We get to learn about how Draco and Harry met, and how Draco makes Harry feel, and that, even though he knows Ron and Hermione will be supportive, he's still nervous because he wants it to go well. Sweet, charming little ficlet well worth a read!

The sex was hot, and it was sweet watching them get to know each other. Overall a really enjoyable read. :)

OMG, this fic is so amazing! I love a good Non-Magical AU, but I'm pretty picky about them, and this one is just perfection! The author manages to include so many characters and so many little canon events and details in such fun and creative ways that it's just such a joy coming across them all. I adore the juxtaposition of rich, high-class Draco and low-brow, American mechanic Harry. The chemistry between these two is just electric, and JFC sexy mechanic Harry is everything I ever wanted in life. The sex is incredibly hot, and the ending has just the right amount of sweet hopefulness. Really fabulous read, cannot recommend enough!

Such a lovely eighth year fic with Harry becoming an adorable bunny animagus, and then Draco stumbling upon him and taking a liking to him. Harry and Draco were both really great in this, and watching their feelings grow and develop was wonderful. The sex was super hot and meaningful, and the whole fic was just a joy to read.

This fic is such a delight! Harry as a shut-in was a very interesting read, and Draco here is fantastically characterized. I loved his voice, and his banter with Harry, and his humour in general as he worked to restore the Malfoy name. Sort of a gentle story, but so lovely, and a really wonderful connection and build between Harry and Draco.

Bonding!fics are one of my favorite tropes and this one was really wonderful! I loved Draco here, and watching him come to terms with the bond, fighting it but also writing it at the same time, was great. The sexual tension between them is really fabulous and the plot was interesting and well-paced. Fun read. :)

I actually read several longer Sterek fics this month, yay! It seems like there have been a lot of long fics lately, but I have just been marking them for later, because I don't have as much time to read. So I was glad to work my way through a few. :D

I play around in a lot of different fandoms and I try to check in every month or so and see if anything new has been written or if there are any must-read fics I missed the first time around. I didn't read too much in these fandoms in the past month or so, but what I read, I liked! :D

The John Blake/Bane pairing from The Dark Knight Rises is actually a completely new fandom for me. One of my favorite Sterek authors, Circe6, mentioned that she had written a Blake/Bane fic, and I adored Joseph & Tom together in Inception (as evidenced by my love of Arthur/Eames) and I liked the movie, so I thought I would give it a go. Definitely an interesting pairing with a lot of darker fics. Not a ton written for them (not surprising since they never actually had any screen time together....), but there were a few fics that I really enjoyed.

I've been reading ALL about "The Johnlock Conspiracy" theory (TJLC) on tumblr and WOW are people thorough! For those of you who aren't familiar, TJLC is basically the idea that the writers of BBC Sherlock have written the entire show with the idea that eventually John and Sherlock will become a canon romantic pairing. And people have come up with a TON of analysis supporting this argument. Not sure if I necessarily believe it, but it's so interesting reading about everybody's ideas. If your interested deducingbbcsherlock on tumblr has written a ton of metas on the subject, and this one is a great place to start for an overview of why TJLCers believe Johnlock will become canon.

Either way, reading about it put me in a Sherlock mood, so I had to scamper off and find some good fic to read! And I found enough excellent ones for the fandom to warrant it's very own rectober post! :D
