What I'm Reading

What did you recently finish reading?

Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach
Probably my lease favorite of the 4 books of hers I've read. Not bad by any means, but the marraige of science and the supernatural wasn't quite as engaging as I'd hoped.

Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
Finally finished this audiobook! I actually quite enjoyed it, and it was interesting reading a book set in South Africa, I just haven't had as much audiobook listening time as I do when I'm in my more usual routine.

Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie
This was perfectly fine, but it didn't wow me. Great writing, and some wonderful lines and insight, but it just didn't quite have that spark.

Ever After Series Books 2 & 3 by Tanya Chris
Finished up this series this past week and I really enjoyed it! I actually liked the last 2 books even better than the first!

Notable Fanfic Reads:
-Two-Point Perspective by [archiveofourown.org profile] FestiveFerret (MCU, Stony)
-Of Offers, Communication, and Declarations by[archiveofourown.org profile] TheReluctantShipper (The Dresden Files, Harry/Marcone)
-A Different Kind of Team Building by [archiveofourown.org profile] ashtraythief (Supernatural RPF, J2)
-What We Pretend We Can't See by [archiveofourown.org profile] gyzym (Harry Potter, Drarry)

What are you currently reading?

Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad
Current non-fiction read. I've actually been on hold at the library for months, but they added a bunch more copies in the wake of what's happening in the USA so I was able to get it sooner, which I'm happy about!

Infinity Son by Adam Silvera
This popped up as a queer YA fantasy read, so I figured I'd give it a read. Seems to have mixed reviews...

Omega Reimagined Series by Tanya Chris
About halfway through the short books in this series. Not a ton of substance, but sometimes that's what I want.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Villians Series by V.E. Schwab
Just got both of the books in this series from the library, so I'll probably at least read the first one this week.

The Well by Marie Sexton
Slowly working through the books by this author that are on KU, and since they have a new release coming out next week that I'm quite keen to read, I'll probably read this one first to make room in my library for the new one :)

Fanfic:
-Wild by [archiveofourown.org profile] Seefin (Harry Potter, Drarry)
-Mr. Eames and the Boy Wonder by [archiveofourown.org profile] saltnbyrne (Inception, Arthur/Eames)
-[community profile] daily_deviant Banging Birthday fics!

I read the Villains duology late last year and really liked them!! I thought Vicious was better than Vengeful, but it was still a pretty easy read. Excited to see what you think of them!

I just read her Shades of Magic series and really enjoyed it, so I'm excited to dig into this one!

I remember reading Cry, the Beloved Country in a big armchair in the public library in one sitting, senior year of high school, but I'm not sure I could tell you much about it now! Maybe I'll give it a "re-read" on audiobook.

Don't you love it when you finally get your hand on hold books? Kinda feels like Christmas.

I hear you on sometimes wanting a read with less substance.

Haha, yes! Of course, it always seems like a get nothing for ages and then ALL of my on hold books at once, and then I'm struggling to read them all before I lose them and have to wait another eternity to get them back, LOL.

I really loved Wild, I hope you enjoy it! It's gone on my reread list thanks to this reminder of it.

I've only read some of their shorter works so far and haven't been blown away... they've been fine, but just didn't quite resonate. But everybody raves about their two longer Drarry fics, so I figured I'd give Wild a go and see how I like it.

I think I've read a couple of the shorter ones but yes their long fics are very popular. They do have an, idk, I guess kind of distinctive writing style? as far as I can remember, and I think it's particularly obvious in their shorter fics, and I can see why it just doesn't land for some people.
gracerene[personal profile] gracerene on June 16th, 2020 05:01 pm (UTC)
Yes! The writing style was fairly distinct and something about it didn't let me totally fall into the story for their shorter fics. But I know that can be a totally different story with a longer/plottier fic!
MalenkayaCherepakha[personal profile] malenkayacherepakha on June 16th, 2020 05:08 pm (UTC)
I don't remember it being so obvious in Wild (although it has been a long time since I read it), and it kind of fits with the plot and setting of the fic so the style doesn't throw you out of it in the same way, as far as I remember anyway.

I'm also going to give What We Pretend We Can't See a go based on your tumblr rec and this post - I was being contrary and refusing to read it because it was too hyped, but I can't hold out if it's actually really good!
gracerene[personal profile] gracerene on June 16th, 2020 05:49 pm (UTC)
LOL, same, TBH. That and it was long and not explicit. But they've written some of my fav fics in other fandoms, so I trusted it would be good, and it was! And there was some smut, so that made me happy, LOL.

I absolutely loved Vicious!! Haven't read Vengeful yet, but I'm hoping to get my hands on it later this month although I have quite a few books to get through first.

I've heard good things about Vicious, so I'm excited!
