What I'm Reading

What did you recently finish reading?

Humans: A Brief History of How We F*cked It All Up by Tom Philips
Most recent non-fiction read, and I thought it was quite interesting! Basically a bunch of historical facts about how things have gone terribly awry.

The Circle of Karma by Kunzang Choden
Most recent read for my Around the World Reading Challenge for Bhutan. I've had a string of ~meh~ books in this challenge, but I actually thought this one was really engaging.

Fairs' Point (Astreiant, #4) by Melissa Scott
Still very much enjoying this queer fantasy series. :D

What are you currently reading?

Women, Culture, and Politics by Angela Y. Davis
Current non-fiction read.

Seducing the Sedgwicks Series by Cat Sebastian
Current MM romance read. Historical series and I've finished books 2 of 3.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
A little more than 1/3 through and I'm honestly enjoying it more than I expected, but I'm really nervous about what's to come...

What do you think you’ll read next?

Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges
Next read for my Around the World Reading Challenge for Argentina.

Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellow
Next Pulitzer Prize winner.

Fool Hearts by Emmy Sanders
Next MM romance read.

A Sky Beyond the Storm (An Ember in the Ashes #4) by Sabaa Tahir
Finally on the last book in this series for my bookclub!

I'll be interested to hear your response to the Kingsolver book. I've tried, but I confess that I have not been able to finish it. She's such an excellent story-teller that she really pulls you along, but I read several of her books in a row and had a sort of burn-out.

I honestly loved it! I read a couple of Kingslover books in high school and liked but didn't love them, so I'd put off reading this one for ages, especially since the summary didn't totally grab me. But I really liked the writing and found myself quite drawn into the story, especially the further in I read!

Similar to the above ^ I'd be very curious to hear what you think of The Poisonwood Bible once you finish – but in my case, because I LOVED that book when I read it as a teen (I loved everything by Barbara Kingsolver – I was obsessed) but now with a couple decade more reflection on own voices writing and all related issues, I wonder with a bit of trepidation how it holds up. (i.e. a well-meaning white American writing about life in the Congo) So I'd be really interested to hear what you think when you finish!

I loved it! Part of my hesitation in reading it was because I knew it was written 20+ years ago and I was a little concerned about how the story being told would hold up, but I actually thought it did. I think there are definitely some issues just inherent in the story, and it's not entirely without problems, but I think the angle she took and the POVs she told the story through generally work fairly well--maybe because I went in really expecting to be cringing throughout, but I was pretty impressed and the story totally sucked me in!

I can imagine the multiple POVs help, and the contrast of Leah versus the dad in terms of the relationship with the Congolese characters.

Oh, that's so good to hear! I really did idolize Barbara Kingsolver as a teen, so it's especially nice not to have to be disappointed by her now. :-)

Same, I loved that book as a teenager but dunno what I'd think now.
